About Budongo Central Forest Reserve

Budongo Central Forest Reserve

Budongo Central Forest Reserve is one of Uganda's largest tropical rainforests, covering approximately 428 square kilometers. Located in the western part of Uganda, near Lake Albert, it is part of the greater Murchison Falls Conservation Area. The forest is ecologically significant, hosting a variety of flora and fauna, including over 360 bird species and 200 butterfly species. One of its main attractions is the chimpanzee population, making it a prime location for primate tracking tourism. Historically, the forest has been subject to various conservation efforts due to pressures from logging and agricultural expansion. The forest supports several species of conservation concern, including mahogany trees and the blue-throated roller. Visitors can engage in guided walks, birdwatching, and primate tracking. The forest also has a network of research stations that contribute to the understanding and preservation of tropical ecosystems.
